Sydney Swans ‘embarrassed and ashamed’ as five players stood down for breach of standards

The Sydney Swans have publicly apologised after five players were stood down for allegedly breaching the club’s standards during an incident linked to a sexual assault allegation at Melbourne’s Pullman Hotel.

Club chief executive Matthew Pavlich described the players’ behaviour as deeply disappointing and said the Swans were “embarrassed and ashamed” by their actions. Speaking alongside chair Andrew Pridham, Pavlich outlined that the players—Riley Bice, Nick Blakey, Isaac Heeney, James Jordon and Chad Warner—had failed to meet the high expectations set by the club. He cited late-night outings, excessive drinking and bringing women back to the hotel as examples of conduct that fell far short of club values.

Pavlich also expressed concern for the welfare of the alleged victim or victims, emphasising that their wellbeing remained the club’s priority. The Swans confirmed they had no further comment on the police investigation, which remains ongoing, but reiterated their support for law enforcement efforts.

Pridham acknowledged the damage to the club’s reputation, offering a formal apology to fans, partners and the broader community. He pledged transparency throughout the process while working to rebuild trust. The club’s statement noted that the AFL had endorsed its decision to stand down the players, who will miss the remainder of the season.

The Swans’ board met on Tuesday evening before announcing the sanctions, stating that the players were in “serious breach” of expected behaviour. The club had previously faced criticism for its initial response to the allegation, which was seen as inadequate. The incident occurred after the team’s players returned to the hotel in the early hours of Monday following a night out.
