Fashion tech founder sentenced to prison for $300m fraud scheme

A fashion technology entrepreneur has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for orchestrating a $300 million fraud scheme, federal authorities announced on Thursday.

Christine Hunsicker, 49, the founder and former CEO of CaaStle Inc, pleaded guilty in March to one count of securities fraud. Prosecutors stated that her actions defrauded hundreds of investors over a six-year period beginning in 2019. Hunsicker received an additional three years of supervised release following her prison term. Her legal team has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Hunsicker, recognized as a prominent figure in the fashion-tech industry, presented CaaStle as a rapidly expanding company with a valuation exceeding $1.4 billion. However, prosecutors revealed that she was aware the business was facing severe financial difficulties, including dwindling cash reserves and mounting expenses.

To secure funding, Hunsicker allegedly provided investors with falsified financial documents, including fabricated income statements, fake audited records, and sham corporate records. These documents exaggerated CaaStle’s profitability and cash holdings. Prosecutors further alleged that she misled investors by claiming their funds would be used to purchase discounted shares from non-existent shareholders.

Instead of investing in the company as promised, Hunsicker allegedly used the fraudulently obtained capital to sustain CaaStle’s operations while concealing its true financial state. Authorities also claim she continued her fraudulent activities even after law enforcement seized her electronic devices in March 2025.

The scheme unraveled in spring 2025 when CaaStle disclosed that Hunsicker had significantly overstated the company’s financial health, leading to its eventual bankruptcy. Originally launched as a web-based clothing rental service for plus-sized women, CaaStle later pivoted to selling its platform to other fashion companies before collapsing under the weight of the fraud.
