UK to warn citizens to stock up on food amid threat from climate crisis and hostile states

The UK government is set to launch a public awareness campaign urging citizens to stockpile essential supplies in preparation for potential national emergencies, including extreme weather events and threats from hostile states.

The initiative, led by the Cabinet Office, will emphasize the importance of household preparedness, such as keeping tinned food, bottled water, and other basic provisions on hand. The goal is to reduce immediate pressure on government resources by ensuring that most families have the means to cope independently during crises.

This push for resilience comes as the UK and Europe face growing risks from climate-related disasters, including heatwaves, flooding, and wildfires. Recent incidents, both domestically and abroad, have prompted officials to reassess emergency planning, including scenarios involving cyber-attacks or military aggression.

Cabinet Office Minister Louise Haigh, who oversees crisis coordination, is overseeing the effort to streamline government responses to emergencies. The move follows criticism of the government’s handling of recent heatwaves, including concerns over an emergency alert system that some argued could endanger domestic abuse survivors.

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Andy Burnham convened a Cobra meeting to address the heatwave threat, as wildfire risks and drought warnings escalated. His predecessor, Keir Starmer, had previously warned of a potential Russian attack on a NATO country within four years, based on Western intelligence assessments.

The government has framed the campaign as part of broader efforts to strengthen national security, with a focus on both individual preparedness and systemic resilience. A spokesperson for the Cabinet Office stated that safeguarding security remains the top priority, alongside raising awareness of simple steps households can take to stay safe.

Meanwhile, tensions with Russia have intensified after the UK provided Ukraine with declassified blueprints to enhance its long-range missile production. The Kremlin condemned the move, accusing Britain of escalating the conflict and undermining peace efforts.
