Jackie Hughes, an 88-year-old woman known for her remarkable gift of bringing people together, has passed away.
Born in Msida, Malta, Jackie's early life took an uncertain turn due to World War II. At the age of two, she and her sister were brought to the UK by their mother while their father remained in Malta. It would be six years before family life was reunited. Growing up in Chatham, Kent, Jackie was surrounded by a close-knit family and developed a strong sense of community.
Jackie's working life began at a local Co-operative department store and later at the Co-op chemist's shop. After marrying Ron Hughes, an engineer in the merchant navy, she switched to become a full-time mother. Ron's career path took them to various international locations, including Libya and Germany, where Jackie adapted to and immersed herself in local cultures, traditions, and ways of life.
Throughout her life, Jackie was renowned for her infectious joy, love of food, and ability to make everyone feel special. Her warm hospitality and welcoming nature allowed her to form lasting connections with those she met. Around her dinner table, family and friends found a sense of belonging, fostered by her thoughtful questions, remembered names, and genuine interest in others.
Jackie dedicated 30 years of her life to caring for her husband, Ron, who passed away in 2023. She is survived by their two children, a granddaughter, Elysa, and a legacy of memories from those whose lives she touched. Her zest for life and spirit of adventurous giving remain a testament to her remarkable character.
